one thing that came up while i was in tokyo and in conversations with folks was the way in which space is incredibly, incredibly privatised in tokyo, or rather the way in which space is deeply insulated. to be honest i did not notice this myself so much, but i wonder if this is because i live in hong kong and therefore insulated spaces are places i feel at home in (or more like i am used to making homes out of insulated spaces). but something i did notice is that tokyo is very into insulation, which hong kong doesn't have at all (i'm feeling this now that we are having a bit of a cold week), and how moving through the city is moving quickly between places which are warm, then the outside which is cold, and then another place which is warm, and how fixated you can get on making sure you can get to the next warm place when it is cold out.
maybe i should have just packed a warmer coat, but it had me thinking about who can go into these warm places and who is asked to stay out of it most times, and whether that's a way i felt the insularity of space even though i didn't see it otherwise.

one thing that came up while i was in tokyo and in conversations with folks was the way in which space is incredibly, incredibly privatised in tokyo, or rather the way in which space is deeply insulated. to be honest i did not notice this myself so much, but i wonder if this is because i live in hong kong and therefore insulated spaces are places i feel at home in (or more like i am used to making homes out of insulated spaces). but something i did notice is that tokyo is very into insulation, which hong kong doesn't have at all (i'm feeling this now that we are having a bit of a cold week), and how moving through the city is moving quickly between places which are warm, then the outside which is cold, and then another place which is warm, and how fixated you can get on making sure you can get to the next warm place when it is cold out.
maybe i should have just packed a warmer coat, but it had me thinking about who can go into these warm places and who is asked to stay out of it most times, and whether that's a way i felt the insularity of space even though i didn't see it otherwise.

I love this! It was so funny how excited the vendor was about meeting two supposedly Chinese women.
One time, I went to a sastería (where there are tailors who fix clothes?), and the tailor asked me where I'm from. I appreciated that he didn't just assume I'm from China. This is how the conversation went:
I needed a tote because I had been tasked with retrieving and hand-delivering some books from Mexico City to Chicago as part of an art cum global logistics project.* I even made sure to pack a tote - one of those reusable shopping bags that fold up into a tidy rectangle the size of a tissue packet — for this very purpose. Alas, I lent that tote to a friend the previous day and now it and he were both on a beach in Oaxaca hundreds of kilometers away.
I met up with V by her apartment to retrieve the books. V needed groceries, so we made our way to her local market lined with stalls selling food, produce, flowers, toys, and household goods. The vendor I purchased my tote from enthusiastically relayed a story that I comprehended only a fraction of. V is fluent in Spanish so I nodded along, laughing whenever they laughed. I gathered it involved the trials and tribulations of learning Mandarin, specifically the words for amigo (朋友 péngyou) and muchas gracias (謝謝 xièxiè). The vendor seemed delighted to be chatting up two Chinese ladies. Afterwards, I asked V if she ever planned on telling him.
“What? That I’m Thai?”
* The personal hand-off of goods, often acquired overseas, is known in China as 人肉遞送 renroudisong (“human meat delivery”). This is contrasted to official delivery channels and constitutes part of the black market economy since its primary benefit is to circumvent costly import taxes, especially when luxury items are involved.

The night before her departure, courier Ms. PORTABLE passes by a small Indonesian food stand that she hadn't noticed before and decides it's funny to eat Indonesian food made in Hong Kong before leaving to take part in an Indonesian-curated exhibition in Germany. She orders a nasi uduk, which is according to the description supposed to include fried chicken wings, a fried egg, and tempeh along with rice and a few slices of cucumber; she is extraordinarily disappointed to find that her favourite, the tempeh, is in this instance substituted for fried potatoes, and she wonders if it's a sign that she should prepare herself for German food...
After an e-mail exchange between courier Ms. PORTABLE and the receiver, an agreement is made for dispatch to Kassel, Germany, where PORTABLE can hand over to a friend of the receiver for taking care of the second leg of the journey. After the initial hello the three of us get to chatting at a matcha restaurant, which turns into a five hour hangout, which turns into us all swapping numbers and now we are text-and-image based friends <3
I am now in Singapore alongside the three packages, which I have attached a photo of in this email. I'm with one of my closest friends and her family, which has entailed many conversations so far about a) the types of food that are good during this time of the year b) who out of Lee Kwan Yew's sons should have been primed for governance, and also predictably a lot of talk about the various treatment of COVID between our two regions.
I'll be in Singapore until January 2nd so if there's a way to get in touch with the receiver that would be amazing! Would really love to get a chance to chat with them as well as what they're up to. My only request would be to plan out a socially distanced gathering for this exchange, as my close friend is immuno-compromised and we're trying to reduce risk as much as possible.

Courier Ms. PORTABLE brings dispatch HQL-420 on small road trip from Kassel to Düren, the home of Prympark, a self-organised housing community shared by a lovely couple she has met just a few weeks earlier; together with her hosts and other friends, they discuss the joys and difficulties of alternative living while getting a tour of this budding hamlet of around 70 residents of all age groups (admittedly mostly white, middle-class, and German, but they are working on that); the next day before departing back to Kassel, PORTABLE detours to the western edge of Düren to stop by the Werkstaat für Aktionen und Alternativen (WAA), the receiving address for dispatch HQL-420; The building is colourfully and blatantly labelled with leftist insignia, and a mohawked resident sits at the back doorstep; after asking for the receiver by name, Mohawk reveals that they mostly don't know others' real names there, though many people pass by using the address as a pick-up spot for their post, so hopefully this book will find its way to the receiver called 'Anja Blank' one day; after explaining to Mohawk this strange delivery of Tsuji Jun, he also introduces WAA as a base for activists working to resist the mining and deforestation projects in the area

Frequent Display Distribute reader TERRRENCE has honed patience for her orders; this time, she waits nearly five months before courier Ms. PORTABLE is recruited for the route between the Tuen Mun Relay Centre and its final destination in Causeway Bay, and it is a strange echo of a minor flow from the outskirts of the city to Hong Kong Island: on the same day 12 June three years prior, thousands had gathered at nearby Tamar Park for a 'picnic', part of a general strike called in protest of the Extradition Law Amendment Bill proposed by the government. That day had ended with excesses of teargas, violent clashes between protestors and police, and arrests—just the beginning of what would continue for the rest of the year.

The receiver chooses Hennessey Road Government Primary School as the handover location, and after arriving, the courier takes a few decorative display images while waiting until a young woman arrives, making long enough eye contact to warrant a possible suspect; the receiver's name is typically male, confusing the courier for a bit, until a young man comes up from behind confirming his identity; they must have also been suspicious and checked out the courier first; delivery completed.
