At midnight on June 7th, 1989, a few days right after the Tiananmen massacre at Beijing, there was a riot in Hong Kong’s Yaumatei district on Pitt Street. After this riot, a public memorial event with a predicted 1.5 million participants was called off. It is said that the riot was started by the Chinese government so as to force the cancellation of the memorial event. Indeed, it has kept Hongkongers from commemorating the massacre up to this day… Pitt Street Riot is an action theater based upon documents and oral history collected from the Yaumatei neighborhood. The theatre consists of three storylines: an elderly left-wing man brushes past the ‘riot’, two lovers go missing on a date because of the riot and a secondary school student tries to engage in an action at school to support the movement…
