Courier Ms. PORTABLE leaps at the opportunity for a paid courier job from Hong Kong to the Amsterdam, having been enlisted to bring a freshly produced book called The Book of Failure from the workshop to its editors. Coincidentally, the art transport of pieces from The Bicycle Thieves exhibition in Hong Kong must be arranged for approximately the same period, including one work by Belgian artist Dries DEPOORTER, who requests that his work Quick Fix be brought back to Ghent as soon as possible. Ms. PORTABLE decides to kill two birds with one stone, arranges the pre-exhibition closing removal of the artist's work and volunteers her services thinking that it would be easy to find a Netherlands-Belgium courier. When she goes to the art space to pick up the artwork, however, realises that its clunky bulk and weight make for quite an unhandy task, so like any responsible courier would do, she takes it upon herself to travel from Amsterdam to Ghent for a same-day transport and EU joy ride.

慢遞員熱女士的報告：「下班慢遞的路上，發現這條地鐵線路好多多多人；作為一個半年多的高齡包裹，我覺得它保養的還不錯；Aoi在上課，我在校門口等她溜出來（想不到吧，哈，這是校門）；成功地交付了慢遞，AOI送了一袋零食給我，裡面有花生牛軋和杏元小餅，我們都是黑髮，一把扎在腦後；回去地鐵的路上開始下小雨，被路邊的香味吸引，折回去買了一個，第一次吃到青椒雞蛋餡的餅；over 到此終於完成了這次超慢的慢遞」

Both of us have black hair with the front part pinned back; on my way back towards the metro it begans to rain, and I get enticed by a fragrant smell on the side of the road; I turn back, and experience the taste of a green pepper and egg filled pancake for the first time; I've finally completed this extremely slow dispatch, over-and-out

The police look at them like worms, squirming around making trouble. The driver doesn't say much, curt but clear. He tells me to sit in the back, and before we've even reached the destination he's already filled out the payment receipt; this is the kind of driver I like

Dispatch is a drawing and a painting. The artist Ms. LAI is really nice, she gave me water to drink, helped to print out the documents and chatted with me for awhile. She said the exhibition these pieces were for was supposed to open on Friday, but being the same time as G20, wouldn't it be better to delay it? The curator's Weibo account was even completely deleted just because she posted a photo of the extradition bill protests. We both looked down at the bills of lading, not knowing how to fill out the form, and then we realised we still have to print another copy for the receiver. And just like last time, it seems like nobody knows what's really going on, but we think it seems 'pretty cute'

Update from Mr. BAXTER: Picked up the packages in two different Beijing coffee shops, one in Chunxiu Lu (the art work, HQL-298), one at Dongzhimen (the two books, HQL-295); on Thursday morning I caught an early flight out of Beijing, packages tightly squeezed into my cabin luggage; arrived in HK at midday Thursday, first stop Admiralty/LegCo, before moving to a cafe to work and then up to CUHK where I m attending a workshop on anthropology research methods.
The packages came with me and now sit under a narrow and hard bed in CUHK student dorms until they reach their next minder on Thursday next week.
This 慢遞 started in an uncharacteristic rush, but has slowed down into a compensating pause now.

我本來沒想記錄這條線，因為突然間——也是機緣巧合——我接了一條付費的線路[關於這單生意可以參閱『展銷場』前言，第21-27頁]。但是在飛機上時，看到了一場異常漂亮的雲，像是被蝕刻的懸崖、翻滾的海浪、手提箱又或是UFO排著隊一個一個湧現，一個騎伏在另一個上面。我想著拍張照吧。我想象著熙熙攘攘的人們像雲朵一樣擁擠在這個光滑無菌的飛機場里，高高的、有弧度的天花板下。然後，另一個慢遞員說他不確定這趟旅程是否能激發任何想法，因為乘坐的是飛機而非24小時的火車；飛機場真的太無菌了。然後，我回應他說我喜歡高昂情緒在這種無菌環境中所帶來的強烈對比。然後，我覺得再另一個慢遞員太天蠍了，在表達願意承接另一條線路時對「愛」這個詞的使用充滿算計。好像如果她不愛我了，那條線路也就終止了。我不確定因為愛而讓一個人捲入工作是否是可恥的，又或者如她所言，一再用荒唐的量化思維衡量事物，反映了我們自身的被奴役，而且不過是按照又一個資本主義邏輯在走。另一個慢遞員說，這個天蠍座慢遞員十分擅長「談戀愛」——就字面意思，談論浪漫的戀愛(「演講」，公開發表言論，表演)。但我們對愛到底能說什麼呢？我覺得她談論愛的時候是在利用我，但也許我拜託她慢遞時她也同樣覺得被利用。也許這就是愛的勞動⋯⋯這種愛的類型就是我們厭惡父母所有的那種，哪怕鬧翻天最後還是綁在一起。一直在一起。這個慢遞員如此感慨於另一個慢遞員討論愛的能力，也說明她在情緒上遭遇了某種困頓。這些話不知道怎麼說。這也是勞動？感覺卡住，搜腸刮肚，想要一吐為快？就像是情緒進入了一個無菌的環境，熙熙攘攘在胃和掛在你嘴後面的那個小東西的大門之間奔波，可航班總是一再延誤。這真是項艱巨的任務。

我想起了一張飛機機翼指向雲海的照片，是一位朋友在2011年拍攝的，當時他48歲，第一次坐飛機。其實他是從北京到廣州去工作，但是在雲端，他寫了一首詩。

這會兒，飛機上的空調還是一向冷的讓人絕望，但我們正朝南飛行，太陽在我這一側。我一直緊靠窗戶以取暖，但我沒有拍雲。

I didn't think about documenting the route this time, mostly because I felt shame to suddenly, by chance, be carrying a route for financial gain.

But then on the airplane, an especially beautiful explosion of clouds, like ravaging cliffs and waves and suitcases and UFOs waiting in line, one after another, bulbous one on top of another. I think about taking a photograph. I think about swathes of people like clouds rushing under the tall, curving glass ceilings of sleek and sterilised airports. About how another courier said he was not sure if he would be able to come up with something this time, travelling by plane as opposed to the 24-hour train ride of his previous route; airports are too sterile. About how I then responded that I like the contrast of such high emotions in those sterile environments. About how I felt like she was being so scorpion in her calculated use of the word love when talking about her willingness to take another route. That courier route would stop when she stopped loving me, supposedly. I was not sure if it should be shameful to engage someone to work for love, or, as she said, to run again on something absurdly quantifiable, meaning facing up to our servitude, and just simply following another capitalist logic. Another courier says that scorpion courier is very good at 談戀愛——literally, to talk about romantic attachments (and the act 演講, of talking publicly, is to perform). But what can we really talk about love? I feel like she's using me when she talks about love, but perhaps just as she feels used that I ask her about routes. That is the labour of love, perhaps...the kind that we resent our parents for, the kind that keeps them together after all those explosions and all this time. All this time.

The courier that is impressed with another's ability to talk about love confesses that she gets stopped by emotion. All these words that don't know how to come out. Is that a labour, too? To be stuck with our hiccups and having to work around not knowing how to liberate difficult words? Like emotion in a sterile environment, rushing all about somewhere between a stomach and the gate of that little thing that hangs in the back of your mouth, even though the flight paths are on perpetual, repeated delay. It is a lot of work.

I think about the photograph of the wing of the aircraft pointing toward a sea of clouds, the one photographed by a friend in 2011 on his first journey by plane at the age of 48. He was on his way from Beijing to Guangzhou for work, actually. But while up in the air he wrote a poem.

The air conditioning on this plane is as usual on high for sterility, but we're flying south, and the sun is on my side. I keep leaning close to the window to keep warm, but I don't take a photograph of clouds.

Courier Update：Just want to let you know that Natasha is in Jogja since yesterday, but unfortunately she forgot to bring the package. So the package now is still in Jakarta—she will be back at some point in April to Jakarta and back again to Jogja. I will inform you about this.

Anyway, the package has been with us since I arrived in Jakarta on 22nd of March (arriving time 20:40)—Natasha picked me up in the airport, we went to the Bangka Island on 24th of March (arriving time 11:30) until 29th of March back to Jakarta (arriving time 13:30). We were in Jakarta until 1st of April, where I went back to HK and Natasha to Jogja. So for the whole journey I was in Indonesia, the package is pretty much with us. The package now is in Natasha's studio in Jakarta

一個浪漫的慢遞員的路途報告：
「這次來香港，是在這份工作的第一次也是最後一次出境出差。

以前在香港上學，對這個地方有著特殊的感情。提前約了些以前的朋友和同學，想用這樣的方式追憶曾經的獅子山下。出行的日子一天天臨近，心裡一首《暗湧》也不停單曲循環。

但當最終回到香港，嚐到的卻是說不出來的滋味。以前一起趕paper在lab通宵做項目，半夜食糖水或去碼頭吹風，這些都在兩三年間物是人非。若不是陸續離開了香港，就是在「滴-滴-滴-」的背景音中忙綠奔走。詩和遠方容易敗給瑣碎的日常，有些東西在粉紅色的想像裡更美。

好在這次出差遇到了工作裡所有China Network的同事。平時大家都分布在中國的各個城市，只是通過郵件和通訊軟件聯絡。這次猶如網友間的世紀會面，更像家人的團聚，彼此之間沒有芥蒂，熟悉而溫暖。

在那幾天裡，和同事大傢伙喝酒聊天到深夜，吐槽完餓了便後半夜冒大雨去街邊吃宵夜；誤入老年卡啦OK吧，唱歌的唱得深情，打call的打得給勁；踩著人字拖去碼頭看星星看月亮，從詩詞歌賦談到人生哲學，一起嚎Baby, baby, it‘s a wild world。

這份工作最讓我感激的，是遇到了這麼些可愛的人。離開之前能和大家用這樣的方式告別，太浪漫也太完美。旅行，有時是為了追尋以前的記憶，但更多的是為了製造新的記憶，對吧。」

The invitation of artist and fellow distributor Ghislaine LEUNG provides the opportunity to present the extended distribution activities of the Light Logistics program, with a brief advertorial for attending publication 『CATALOGUE』, and serves as the meeting point for dispatch HQL-267

LEUNG’s exhibition “CONSTITUTION” at Chisenhale Gallery puts forth a form of institutional critique that invokes the rewiring or transgressing of the physical parameters of the institutional space—re-channeling elements such as time, energy, and attention towards alternate or unintended routes. In this context, Leung’s “CONSTITUTION” generously reassigns valuable resources of “space” and “attention”, allowing for courier and LIGHT LOGISTICS courier Ms. LIN to make a bid for Display Distribute’s crowd-sourced independent publishing distribution project in the form of an advertorial and site of live distribution.

An advertorial is paid content placed within an allegedly neutral or objective publication. It typically appears indistinct from the rest of the content and yet often its tone betrays it. But, given the predicament of most publications these days, might we say that everyone is pushing their own interests in one way or another? Why not make these aims transparent?

Travelling from Hong Kong to London in order to attend the last segment of the Feral Business Research Network in Bristol, which concluded with a public-facing three-day “Festival of Radical Administration,” courier Ms. LIN was particularly incited to think further about what it means to consider the minutiae of everyday administration (e-mails, Wechat correspondence, etc) as inextricably embedded in art practice, and whether eliding the distinction between what we do for “work” and our “creative” output can constitute a radical act. It seems that the longer that we reify binaries that maintain “art” as a neutral category, absolved from the more insidious process that surround it, the longer we sustain a world in which much of the real work that we do is considered “worthless” and we are forced to walk around as detached and fragmented individuals.

The advertorial and distribution act at Chisenhale is an attempt to render the work transparent. The useless, meaningless, and boring are not in this case a representation, but a true advent of the network at play—as was proven by the passing over of dispatch HQL-267 to the receiver, who received the package via audience members’ movements at the event’s end.

Courier Mr. LEE returns every year to Hong Kong for the Lunar New Year holiday from his studies in Taiwan and makes his way up to the third floor of a space formerly called WooferTen that he used to co-organise. Many years of work, materials, archive and other paraphernalia have accumulated there, and each year he begins again to sort through and distribute, give away and/or sell the mountains of stuff.
