Description
Signs is a zine about pre-digital and/or handwritten signage in Hong Kong. The traces of sign painters hands speak to the ingenuity of independent businesses, as well as Hong Kong’s shifting urban space post-colonisation. I started taking photos of signs as a way of appreciating the calligraphic and typographic impact of the texts being written. Even if just for advertising congee, these sign artists spare no effort in flourishes, or I daresay visual melodrama. Signs is a homage to the pedestrians gaze, or what it means to consider Hong Kong through endless encounters of text on a street level. First edition printed at Small Tune Press. Second edition printed at Inkchacha.
