This book is dedicated to pragmatic Chinese consumers.  With that in mind, you are welcome to open A Manual for Owning Hokkaido Snow and open the door to a moving journey through romantic, white Hokkaido prefecture. One Valentine’s Day we went to the Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade in the Central District of Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, to sell a very special souvenir: Hokkaido Snow. Yes, Hokkaido Snow is indeed famous, and it attracts many Chinese tourists. There were only a few fortunate enough to buy—at the bargain price of 100 yen—that day’s limited edition of authentic, “Made in Japan” Hokkaido Snow to bring back to China. Only 100 yen, believe it or not, completely tax-free. But as spring approaches, customers pining for the next special edition of Hokkaido Snow can wait until next year.

Conceptual artist Boat ZHANG was born in 1983 somewhere in China and graduated from one of the most popular art colleges in London. She is always travelling, though currently she often lives and works in Shanghai or Tokyo. Rather than look at art as mere visual and aesthetic production, she takes it as a game of possibilities for the individual to improvise reactions to every situation. Maybe this is why she has little money, but her life is not bad. She always tries to rethink existing ideas, rules, forms and norms by way of slightly altered familiarities. Her work has been created and shown in China, Japan, the UK and Cuba. She is a member of the artist groups Team Yameyo, row&row and Club Maiko. She also writes and takes photos for magazines under other names to earn some coffee money.
