Description

Xsport on Paper: Samplings of Publishing Practices from the Global South is a compilation of 18 case studies by Taiwanese artist and writer CHANG Wen-hsuan, exploring independent publishing and resistance in Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Visiting Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan, Chang interviewed artists, revolutionaries, NGOs, independent publishers, independent libraries, historians, and designers—18 case studies of a multivalent ‘south’ made between 2018 and 2020. Their practices redefine not only publishing and resistance, but also politicity and contemporaneity.

CHANG Wen-Hsuan is a Taiwanese artist, writer, and educator, currently a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), University of Amsterdam. Working at the intersection of contemporary art, historiography, and pedagogy, her practice interrogates the narrative structures of institutionalised history to expose the power dynamics embedded in dominant accounts. Through installations, moving images, and lecture-based formats, she constructs metafictional spaces where skewed documentation and first-person accounts activate history’s unrealised potentials, allowing it to be re-read, re-written, and re-imagined. In 2018, she launched Writing FACTory, a virtual factory that manufactures tactical forms of publishing as political and pedagogical practices.
